When Do Uptown Ankeny's Wonderlights Come On, and What Happens Before Then?

October 29, 2026

Uptown Ankeny lights up on 80 of the last 92 nights of the year. Fright Lights runs every night in October. Uptown Wonderlights takes over on Friday, November 13, and stays on through December 31. Between Halloween and that Friday, SW 3rd Street goes dark for 12 nights, and the things worth leaving the house for move a couple of miles southwest to Prairie Trail.

So this weekend is the end of one show, followed by a short break, and then the start of a bigger one. If you plan around the break instead of looking past it, you end up with a fuller November.

Fright Lights has one weekend left

Uptown's Fright Lights turns on every night at sunset, and Latitude 41 is this year's presenting sponsor. Travel Iowa's listing ends the run on Saturday, October 31, which leaves Thursday, Friday and Saturday of this week.

If you have kids who want both candy and spooky lights, Friday works well. The District's Trick or Treat runs from 4 to 7 p.m. on October 30. It's free and family-friendly, and participating businesses hand out candy and treats, with specials for parents too. Once it wraps up, it's dark enough to drive over to Uptown for a last loop past the displays.

The 12 dark nights belong to Prairie Trail

Once Fright Lights shuts off, the next two big gatherings are both on the Prairie Trail side of town.

The first is the Ankeny Chamber's free Discover Ankeny vendor fair on Thursday, November 5, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the FFA Enrichment Center. Chamber Director Jamie Anderson told the Ankeny Chamber that the event gives members a chance to connect with residents and show off their businesses. If you've been meaning to find a new local service, shop or restaurant, this is the easiest evening of the fall to meet a lot of them at once.

Two days later, the Ankeny Art Center's Santa's North Pole Village craft sale takes over Prairie Trail Sports Complex on Saturday, November 7, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The Art Center lists nearly 200 vendor booths, plus trolley shuttles carrying Santa and the Grinch. It's the first big chance of the season to knock out handmade gifts. It also lands six days before Uptown's shops hold their own holiday kickoff, so you can shop both without one crowding the other.

Opening night is a shopping night

Wonderlights comes on during Champagne & Mistletoe, Uptown's evening out to kick off the holiday season, which runs from 5 to 8 p.m. on November 13. Community State Bank is co-hosting. Shops stay open late, and participating businesses offer a toast, a treat and special deals.

The participant list is a who's who of Uptown storefronts: Ankeny Area Historical Society, Carmen's Flowers Uptown, Department R, Firetrucker Brewery, Fitness Sports, The Funky Zebras Boutique, Fuzed Jewelry, Gladdies, Leaning Tower of Pizza, Paisley Pineapple Children's Boutique, Porch Light Coffeehouse, Real Deals, Sweet Swirls Rolled Ice Cream, Tight Club, Tweedle Dee's, Uptown Confections & Curiosities, Uptown Dairy, Wee's Tees, West Forty Market and XOXO Gift & Home.

The carriage rides are what make this night different from any other Wonderlights evening. Uptown describes a horse-drawn ride through the "newly lit" displays and past storefronts dressed up for the holidays. A few details to know before you go:

  1. Pickup and drop-off are at the Ankeny Historical Society, 301 SW 3rd St.
  2. Tickets are sold on site only, at $10 per rider. Kids 3 and under ride free.
  3. Payment is cash or Venmo.
  4. Ride hours are listed as 5 to 7:30 p.m., so the carriages stop half an hour before the shops do.

Since tickets are only sold on site, getting there near 5 p.m. gives you the most wiggle room. Ride first, then spend the last hour browsing while the shops are still open late.

The opening date also follows a pattern. Wonderlights started on Friday, November 8, in 2024 and Friday, November 14, in 2025, and this year it starts Friday, November 13. All three were the second Friday of November. If you want to pencil in next year early, that's a reasonable guess.

What you'll find once the lights are on

Uptown's Wonderlights page calls it a free display, lit at sunset every night through December 31, and a partnership between the Uptown Ankeny Association and the City of Ankeny. Mullets Uptown Ankeny is the 2026 presenting sponsor. Travel Iowa counts more than 50 animated displays across about six blocks of SW 3rd Street, through the Ankeny Market & Pavilion park and along the High Trestle Trail. It also thanks the local businesses and organizations that sponsored individual displays.

The two pieces people remember most are the light tunnel and the 25-foot show tree. In 2024, Uptown described the tunnel as stretching over the High Trestle Trail and said the tree ran a music-synced show every 30 minutes. Travel Iowa's photo captions put the tree at SW 3rd and SW Cherry. If the show schedule matches 2024, you'll never wait more than half an hour for the next one.

The Market & Pavilion park is a nice way to see how the season changes. On Saturdays from May 23 to September 26, it hosted the Uptown farmers market, 8 a.m. to noon, at 715 W 1st St. Through December, the same park is part of the lights route.

On foot, by bike or from the car

Uptown says Wonderlights can be enjoyed on foot, by bicycle or from your car, and each way gives you something different.

  • On foot: Walking is the only way to linger under the tunnel and catch a full tree show, and it puts you right at the shop doors on SW 3rd.
  • By bike: The High Trestle Trail runs right through the displays, according to KCCI's 2025 holiday roundup. If you live near a trail connection, you can ride in without parking at all.
  • By car: Last season, KCCI listed vehicle access from South Ankeny Boulevard and West First Street. That was the 2025 route, so check Uptown's page before you go in case anything changed for 2026.

December brings both sides of town together

Once Wonderlights is running, Prairie Trail has its own big night. Dazzling in The District is Saturday, December 5, with the annual tree lighting at 6:30 p.m. followed by fireworks. With Uptown's displays already lit, you could watch the tree lighting and fireworks in The District and then drive over for a late loop through Uptown on the same night.

Uptown's own family event in December is Miracle on 3rd Street. Travel Iowa's 2026 listing includes Santa, reindeer, crafts at Santa's Workshop, a live nativity, Uptown Express rides and a 7:30 p.m. snowfall. The listings don't agree on the date, though. Travel Iowa says Friday, December 11, and Uptown's Miracle on 3rd page says December 4. Check Uptown's page closer to the date before you promise the kids.

This Saturday is your last night with Fright Lights. After that, the next nights to put on the calendar are November 5 and November 7 in Prairie Trail, and then Friday, November 13, on SW 3rd Street, when the carriages roll out from the Historical Society at 5 p.m.

If you take a carriage ride through the lights on November 13, I'd love to hear which shop you ended up in afterward. And if you're starting to think about what next holiday season looks like in your own home, whether that means more room for family, less house to keep up, or being able to walk to the lights, I'm happy to talk it through with you.
